Profile:

Zhu Shining, born in December1949, is a professor in physics and doctoral supervisor at Nanjing University. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a fellow of American Physical Society, a fellow of the Optical Society of America and a fellow of the Chinese Optical Society. He is now a deputy director of Nanjing University’s Academic Committee and director of the academic committees of both the School of Physics and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He is also a vice president of Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology, chair of Jiangsu Society of Physics, and a member of the Science & Technology Commission of Ministry of Education. In addition, he is a member of the executive council of Chinese Physical Society, director of its Committee on Defects in Solids and a member of the National Steering Committee for Nanotechnology as well as a member of its experts group. Professor Zhu is also on the editorial board of National Science Review-Mathematics, Science China and Chinese Science Bulletin. He was once chair of Nanjing University’s Department of Physics, dean of the School of Physics and leader of the preparation group to set up Nanjing University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Zhu received his master’s and doctorate from Nanjing University’s Department of Physics and has been conducting research on micro-structured functional materials, nonlinear optics, laser physics and quantum optics for a long time. He has made systematic achievements on the design, fabrication, properties characterization, new effects study and devices development of micro-structured materials. He is holding over 20 invention patents at home and abroad and has published more than 400 papers on world-class academic journals including Science, Nature and Physical Review Letters.

The research achievements of his group have been included on the list of “Top 10 News Stories of the Basic Research in China” for three times and on the list of Ten Major Scientific and Technological Achievements of China's Colleges and Universities” twice. As one of the major people in charge, he made great contributions to the project “The Design and Fabrication of Dielectric Superlattice Materials and their Properties and Applications,” which won the first prize of the 2006 National Natural Science Award.
