Profile

Professor Zhang now serves as a professor, doctoral supervisor and expert of the CPC Organizational Department’s Global Experts Recruitment Program. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Peking University’s Department of Electronics and State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Network, respectively. Then, he earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford, UK. Upon graduation, he continued as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oxford and Max Planck Institute on the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg, Germany. While in Germany, Prof. Zhang was funded by the Alexander von Humbolt Foundation as a Humboldt research fellow. In 2013, he was selected into the Overseas Young Scholars Project of China and joined the faculty at the Department of Quantum Electronics and Optical Engineering, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Nanjing University. Currently, he is also a reviewer for journals such as Nature Photonics, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, Science Bulletin, Physical Review A, Applied Physics Letters and Optics Letters.

Prof. Zhang’s research area covers quantum optics, quantum information engineering and the interaction between light fields and quantum materials. He focuses on the preparation, manipulation and detection of non-classical optical states and their application in imaging, communication, precision measurement and quantum simulation, as well as nonlinear optical and quantum optical phenomena in high temperature superconductors.

His representative results include:

  • The first comprehensive analysis of the security of quantum cryptographic schemes based on the continuous-variable degree of freedom of single photons.

  • An entanglement distillation method based on quantum memories, which has an exponential improvement in spatial and temporal efficiency compared with traditional methods

  • The first complete tomography of quantum detectors, also the largest scale quantum tomography at that time

  • A series of work on the noise tolerance and optimal design of quantum precision metrology.

Since 2007, he has published over 30 papers on SCI journals, including 1 in Nature Photonics, 1 in Nature Material and 9 in Physical Review Letters. He also co-authored two book chapters.
